December 19, 2011. The Commission for the Italian Higher Institute for Health, the authority responsible for launching the phase one clinical trial of RG2833, and the Ethical Committee of the San Luigi Gonzaga hospital facility, (in Orbassano, Turin), have approved Boston-based company Repligen to carry out the world's first study on FA patients in Italy with their new generation drug specifically for treating Friedreich's Ataxia, RG2833, a drug belonging to the family of histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi).
This result marks a red-letter day for the scientific research carried out for the treatment of this disease and rewards the unceasing contribution that GoFAR has made in just five years since the discovery that certain HDAC inhibitors could stop the progression of the disease and eventually reverse the symptoms (Joël Gottesfeld et al.). Indeed, GoFAR has provided financial support for the international community of researchers, (Massimo Pandolfo and his team, Mark Pook and colleagues), as well as the Repligen company throughout all pre-clinical development phases of RG2833. GoFAR will continue to provide support during all phases of clinical research with the hope that the drug is successful.
